Hull university Gaming Society
By Hazel Bloomfield, President of Hullfire Newspaper. With Thanks to the executive team at the Hull University Gaming Society.
The Hull University Gaming Society (H.U.G.S) is the largest and most active society on campus, offering something for everyone, whether you’re a casual gamer or a high-stakes competitor. This society welcomes students of all experience levels and preferences in video game genres, creating a hub for gamers across campus to connect and share their interests. There are two main ways to enjoy everything that Game Society has to offer: the Green Room socials and the events at The Haworth.
The Green Room provides a unique twist on traditional university socials. It’s a completely sober environment where members can relax and socialize every Wednesday on campus. This casual gathering allows students to come together and play their favourite games, such as Mario Kart. It’s also an opportunity to try out new games and gaming consoles, from computers to the Nintendo Switch. By offering this type of social event, Game Society ensures that those who prefer not to drink or party late at night can still experience the fun and camaraderie of the society right on the Hull University campus.

The Haworth provides a classic experience typical of university society socials. If you’re looking for a lively party atmosphere, this is the place to be. Every week, Game Soc hosts themed events that feature activities such as karaoke, pub games, and various video games set up throughout the venue. Past themes have included a wide range of ideas, from movie and book characters to more abstract concepts like pyjamas. The Hayworth is one of the biggest attractions of the society, and its socials are managed exceptionally well by the two social secretaries, who ensure that everyone has an enjoyable night.

Game Soc is known for its regular collaborations with other societies on campus, providing its members with opportunities to engage in new activities and meet people they might not encounter otherwise. Notable examples of these collaborations can be seen with the Board Game Society and the Pool and Snooker Society. One of the more prominent demonstrations of this collaboration is the annual 24-hour charity event, which involves multiple societies. Game Soc has consistently participated in this event by organizing activities and contributing to fundraising efforts.
A notable aspect of Hull University’s gaming society is its esports team, known as the Hull Hornets. The Hull Hornets feature multiple teams, each specializing in different games such as Overwatch, Apex Legends, and many others. Through the Hull Hornets, students have the opportunity to sharpen their skills in a more competitive gaming environment, which may not be as common in other areas of the society. These teams not only represent the gaming society at various tournaments and events but also serve as representatives of the university as a whole. Game Soc is the place to be for all your gaming-related needs (they even have their own Twitch stream)
